I always start off my beans in the greenhouse and then harden them outside for planting. This year with the weather being so changeable, particularly of late being cold and very windy, should I delay planting them in the ground or plant them with some form of protection such as fleece?

SPUDLY

I'm holding on until the end of the month. Got them in pots, but nothing showing yet.

My early ones have a fleece 'sail' clipped to the poles.

What did you use to clip the fleece on with Tim?

By the way, did you ever find out what that mystery plant was?

betula

I use the simple clothes peg to clip fleece to canes.

I am not putting runner beans out till the end of May.Hopefully the midlands should be clear of frost by then.In previous years I have put them out due to sheer impatience. :)

Kepouros

Mine (in deep 4" pots) are staying in the cold frame for another fortnight yet

I planted mine out yesterday as they were too tall to keep in pots. I also put fleece around the frame using clothes pegs. Havent been up there yet today (dealing with a neglected garden) but will go and see how this has survived!

That's my worry too in so far as they are getting too tall! Think I will have to bite the bull by the horn plant them out and wrap fleece around as well.

I have had much better results by planting the beans direct into the ground. Why not try a few direct sown and compare the results??

gardenqueen

Betula, I do have some seeds left so will give that a go. Thanks  :)

Ours aren't even poking through yet. No rush though
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"
