Strange rustlings in the Ivy

Yesterday I became aware of a lot of noise in the Ivy about four feet off the ground.  It went on for a good hour or so and sounded like something was possibly building a nest - claws or talons were certainly being used.  It seems rather late for birds and a bit high for mice.  Any ideas?

Bit near the ground, but it could be bats roosting.

Well that would be good too but I've never seen any around here, sadly.  Don't they sleep during the day?
