PurpleHeather

Thought you might be showing us a crop there Tim. We have about 20 which look like they will be on the plate at the weekend.

tim

And where are you??

Even in sunny Hampshire we're not that far ahead.  Our well-established plants had the first shoots showing week before last, but still not ready to pick.  Newer plants which we can't pick till next year have spears about 10 cm high.

We're patient  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I'm envious!  Got 20-odd plants from J Parker's last year and they all failed.  Turned that bed into a flower bed this year....

Digeroo

Just a few tiny shoots, but on the other side of the site someone has them a foot tall, so it must depend on the variety.

tim

There are certainly early & late varieties.

Don't know where PURPLEHEATHER is (wish folk would show location) but we're 650' up in the Cotswolds.

Ah, yes - but they're not for the table!!

Tin Shed

Picked the first three spears two days ago and more are coming through. Its the first year we can pick the crop for the full season then hopefully it will be asparagus glut ;D

grotbag

Thsi is year two for my 10 plants, so a light picking.  I thought mine were abnormal, they have been through since beginning of April :o  I have had 3 light pickings.  some spears are already turning to fern.  Is that normal/usual??? ???

Hi Tim! Long time, no see!

I planted my first ever asparagus crowns yesterday. Now have to wait until my son is 5 or 6 until we can eat any! Hopefully by that time he might actually eat green things!
gone to pot :D

tim

Nice to see you again!

You could always grow the Continental white stuff?

Vortex

If mine hadn't been planted last year I could have been cutting 2 weeks ago.

Suzanne

Had a look - 4 spears poking above ground. Perhaps 7 - 10 days before I can pick, getting impatient  :)

mIne have had to be in fish boxes and follow me round the country from contract to contract and finally this year i planted them in the ground, but knocked of the short white first shoots as i was firming them in- bugger- , but wow they were so sweet!
Looking forward to next year when i might actually get a crop i can eat.
