I am a bit confused about propagating this? I wonder if this was meant to be a Spring one???

Do you mean Princess Diana?  http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=530

If so, mine flowers from June through to October although this year the long spring drought has stressed her into crisping up so I have today hacked her back completely and will give her a good feed and water to help her send up new shoots.

That's the one :) ...I'm not sure how to propagate her?

well i thought propagating clematis was very difficult, but not according to the web. I'm not convinced. Personally i'd try layering it, with perhaps a cut in the stem. Again <they> used to say that clematis was unusual in that it didn't form new roots at the node, but midway between the nodes. No mention of that either, so where you make a cut is up to you.

That's whats been confusing me...some sites are saying hard and only internodal cuttings but didn't determine when...others sayng heel cuttings....

well i think they say take cuttings in May June, but that may just be that later cuttings will have to be taken indoors before they root properly.
I usually found heel cuttings were the most successful for most things, if clematis has such a thing.

Hi I consider myself to be an good and expereinced cuttings raiser but despite this ive never been a able to get a single clematis cutting to root.
But cold stratifying the seeds oftern works well if you are willing to wait for the plants to mature.
good luck and let us know if you find a way

I've never been able to get them to root either until this year.  I took about 8 cuttings, each cut about 1" below a node and 1" above and then just shoved them in a 'pot within a pot', put it inside a Morrisons carrier bag (slightly opaque) and onto the hot bed.

They went all brown and crispy but now three of them have shoots growing, took about 6 weeks.  Now no Clematis is safe from my Secateurs.
Best laid plans and all that
