Wandering around the plot in a desultory manner, wondering what to change for this year, and blow me if the asparagus isn't poking its nose through. I know it's been a warm winter but that's ridiculous. What chance of those spears surviving to cuttable length, I wonder?

My goodness, I haven't even got around to cutting mine down yet. I do remember that the earliest spears in April tend to be stunted though, and don't come to much until things warm up around the middle of the month.

I agree that things are out of sync as its been quite mild in the West Midlands.  We've had rhubarb growing all winter on the allotment, although there's not really been enough to make a crumble yet.

On the TV a couple of weeks ago a commercial producer in Evesham was cutting his earliest asparagus ever! It was under cover of course but he was gobsmacked. Got daffodils out in our back garden already!
