Herbs in a window box

hello collective :)

i need your help with my herb box. i am planning to have some hers handy on the balcony, but was wondering if there are any that dont like being next to one another? (this is like trying to organise a group at kids at a birthday party ;))

i want to plant chives, coriander, basil, majoram, oregano and parsley, not necessarily in that order. the box is about 3 inches deep at most. i also have one slightly deeper pot just in case there is a grumpy herb among the lot.

any suggestions?

I think parsley would do better in the deeper pot.  I think all the herbs are ok with each other.  Basil likes to be warm and dislikes draughts so might not be happy if it gets windy up yer balcony (if you'll pardon the expression)  ;D

Oregano/ majoram (theyre the same arent they?) tend to ramble so plant them on the edge to create more space- ie  trailing over the side

well it does get windy but i was planning on having the basil closest to the house wall, so hopefully shelter enough there.

majoram and oregano are slightly different from one another - those close cousins. i have sweet majoram (the normal one) and a greek oregano which is supposedly stronger and sharper ???

we'll see. they have finally grown from weedy tiny little seedlings into something resembling a matt of plants :)

Oregano and Marjoram close together may cross pollinate.

They will all be happy together,but three inches is pushing one`s luck a bit-it will dry out so quickly for one thing. I would go for a soil based compost.

Greek oregano is indeed `fiery`-nice but not to all tastes.

I bet it will all look wonderful Svea - the only herb which to my mind is not at ease with other plants is mint as it tends to take over the whole garden!
